CHAGGA VILLAGE ADDRESS: Tanzania 🇹🇿 MTORI (BANANA SOUP): Peel and slice unripened bananas and yams. In a pot, boil beef then pour out the beef stock. In the same pot, add bananas, boiled beef, and yams. Add salt and water. Cover with banana leaves, then cover with a small pot to allow it to steam. Let it sit for 30 minutes. Add water and oil and allow it to steam more. Mash everything together. Pour in warmed beef stock and continue mixing and mashing to make it softer. 🇹🇿 ROASTED GOAT: In a pot, add salt and the goat's neck and blood. Remove innards. Skewer it and place it on a roasting spit, rotating it every 20 minutes. After about an hour, rub lemon and salt on the goat. Continue roasting for about 2 more hours. 🇹🇿 MACHALARI (GOAT INTESTINES): In a large pot, add all of the organs and intestines (whole) and water. Place the pot on the fire and allow it to boil. Add bananas. 🇹🇿 GOAT LIVER: Skewer the liver and place it on the fire. Let it cook for about 15 minutes. Wrap it in cahl fat. Place it back on the fire for 10 more minutes. 🇹🇿 BLOOD & CLEAR SOUP: In a pot, boil all of the innards. In a bowl, add half a cup of raw blood. Add 3-4 ladles of white soup and mix. Add some goat tripe. 🇹🇿 KITOLOLO: Clean the greens and slice them thinly into a bowl. In a separate bowl, slice banana thin. In a separate bowl, crack and peel kweme (oyster nut) the grate it. In a pot, add leaves, banana, nuts, and more leaves. Add soda ash mixed with water. Place on fire. After 30 minutes, add sour milk (fermented for 2-3 days) then mash. In this video you will see traditional Tanzanian food from the Wachaga tribe who lives on the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, East Africa. The Chaga or Chagga are a Bantu-speaking indigenous Africans and the third largest ethnic group in Tanzania.[2] They traditionally live the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and eastern Mount Meru[3] in both Kilimanjaro Region and eastern Arusha Region. Their relative economic wealth comes from favorable fertile soil of mount Kilimanjaro and successful agricultural methods, which include extensive irrigation systems, terracing, and continuous organic fertilization methods practiced for thousands of years.[4] The Chaga are said to have descended from various Bantu groups who migrated from elsewhere in Africa to the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, a migration that began around the start of the eleventh century.[3] While the Chaga are Bantu-speakers, their language has a number of dialects somewhat related to Kamba, which is spoken in southeast Kenya,.[3] They are ethnically related to the Pare, Taveta, Shambaa people and Taita peoples. The inhabitants reveal migration occurred back and forth throughout the history of these groups, and the Chaga people should be viewed as a part of the bigger population inhabiting the entire Kilimanjaro Corridor. The Chagaland is traditionally divided into a number of small kingdoms known as Umangi. They follow a patrilineal system of descent and inheritance.[3] Their traditional way of life is was based primarily on agriculture, using irrigation on terraced fields and oxen manure. Although bananas are their staple food, they also cultivate various crops, including yams, beans, and maize. In agricultural exports, they are best known for their Arabica coffee, which is exported the global market markets, resulting in coffee being a primary cash crop.

While Rachel, Tova, and Dad climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mom and I decided to do some adventuring! We found a family which brings you to their village on the slope of Mt. Kilimanjaro and welcomes you into their home. We went on a long hike to a beautiful waterfall and once we returned to their home we were given a wonderful meal. Afterwards we were shown the full process of making coffee. It was a wonderful experience!! I would absolutely reccommend doing this for anyone traveling in the northern Tanzania region. What a wonderful experience I lived today in the village of Maturima near Moshi, Tanzania. We immersed ourselves in the culture of the Chagga tribe. They not only told us their history but also showed us the tunnels where their ancestors used hide for long periods of time to avoid the attacks of the Maasai tribes. They also showed us the process of making coffee with their songs and dances that are a vital part of daily African life. Here in this region, the Chagga tribe produces the world-famous Arabica coffee. So today we tried this delicious coffee while dancing and singing with them. We also had the beautiful chance to go and visit CHAGGA MUSEUM with my Fiancé..since I’m a CHAGGA in Tribe so we had to go together and get to learn more history about CHAGGA Tribe🥰🥰. It was really amazing experience and we learned a lot concerning CHAGGA Tribe and Fiancé got to hear the CHAGGA History Background and it was really interested. So we would like to advise you guys to go and visit this place.
For the third episode I headed straight South to Tanzania, to observe how the receding of Kilimanjaro glacier is changing life around it. Shimbwe is a chagga village that sits on a lower slope of Mount Kilimanjaro, right at the borders of the National park. This community gets first hand the water coming down the mountain. This means that the water is clean but also that is becoming scarse do to global warming and local human activities. This place is literally surrounded by vegetation, mainly banana, coffee and avocado trees. People here used to have plenty of water for irrigation but that’s not the case anymore. The situation is worse down the valley. In Maji Moto, a remoted village in the Arusha region the only water source is situated 70m underground and the water that used to be distributed from nearby sources is not enought anymore to reach the village. A lot can be done to help this people in facing their challenges. I started collaborating with local leaders to help them using digital tools at their advantage, starting with a campaign to fund the planting or more trees. Marangu, Tanzania Kinukamori water falls named by young Chagga tribe lady who became pregnant before marriage, it was NOT allowed in their culture. So, she was totally lost because that and walked to the top of the water falls, she was planning to take huge jump to eternity (kill herself) but after considering she decided to go back to village and ask forgiveness, at the moment she started to go back, she saw leopard front of her and she had only two choices = Jump to the eternity or to be killed by the leopard, she decided to jump. Sad story, but the water falls in the evergreen forest with ice cold, daily melting kilimanjaro spring water looks like a paradise, perhaps most beautiful place i`ve ever visited.
There's a mountain that you may have heard of called Mt. Kilimanjaro. Most people just get in a private car, ride to the gate, spend around $1000 and then hike the mountain for the next 10 days. I had different plans, especially since I didn't have $1000. It was a hike in of itself just walking through the villages to the gate, so I decided to spend the day on that. Along the way I was shocked by the kindness and curiosity of the Chagga villagers I met. Great people to have some banana beer with. If you're planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, look up David when you arrive at Marangu Gate. Our first of two expeditions are a visit to the Materuni Waterfalls, epic. Lunch and a coffee tour combined with the local Chagga Tribe up a part of Kilimanjaro. Coffee I hear you say, what kid is going to enjoy peeling coffee beans? This ended up being one of our highlights. We were not only taught the whole bean to cup process we could help be a part of it. Singing chants with the locals to encourage the beans value. The kids really enjoyed bashing the beans in a large pestle and mortar.
