Hi everyone! I went on a 7 day trip to Hokkaido this week, where I explored the city of Sapporo, Otaru as well as the beautiful flower fields in Furano and Biei :). The first part of the trip was a business trip, where I had some work in Sapporo, but then I took a few days off to explore more of Hokkaido. Hokkaido was one of my bucket list destinations in Japan, and was definitely worth the hype! I had some of the most delicious food and saw some spectacular scenery. Even if you are not skiing or snowboarding, there are still so much things to do, places to visit in Hokkaido region. End of January 2023, we flew from Tokyo to Hakodate, a traditional port with charming historical areas and gorgeous night views. We recommend 1 or 2 nights in Hakodate and here is all things to do, food you must try, places to visit for your travel itinerary to Hakodate: 1) Eat Chinese Fried Chicken Burger from Lucky Pierott Do not underestimate this "clown" burger chain that only can be found in Hakodate because their Chinese fried chicken burger is actually very juicy. We did not expect burger in a small Japanese city in Hokkaido can be delicious but it was quite yummy indeed! 2) Ride the ropeway up to Mt Hakodate to see beautiful city from above. We recommend to start going up during sunset 3) Trying food that is unique or only can be found in Hokkaido 7-Eleven hot food snack, only in Hokkaido region - Saku Saku Roll (Japanese fish cake) 4) Must try freshest seafood at Hakodate Morning Market Kaisendon bowl is a rice topped with fresh raw seafood like ikura (salmon roe), uni (sea urchin), shrimp, crab, sasihimi etc. Also, don't forget to try squid & snow crab bun from Kaniman Chaya. Hokkaido is blessed with freshest seafood you will ever taste and there are so many types of crabs: King Crab, Hairy Crab, Hanasaki Crab that are super fresh and so sweet. In Hakodate Morning Market, you can also buy some fruits to try like strawberry and melon. Hokkaido's melon is a MUST try fruit! 5) Shopping and sightseeing at Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse Huge commercial warehouse with lots of Japanese craft shops, perfect for shopping. Of course there are some food stalls, dessert and cafe like Starbucks in Hakodate Bay. 6) Eating dessert at a traditional tea shop built in 1900s Kikuizumi Cafe was built in early 1900 and still maintain the old Japanese traditional house architecture that is now open as tea shop or cafe. Try the tofu shiratama parfait while mesmerizing irori - a sunken hearth in Japanese traditional houses that is rare to see. 7) Must try food: Miso Ramen in Hakodate Hakodate is the birthplace of miso ramen so obviously you need to try miso ramen while visiting Hakodate. We tried Menchuubo Ajisai near the Goryokaku Tower. 8) Visit Goryokaku Tower and Goryokaku Park The view of Hakodate from Goryokaku Tower is truly magical especially during winter with winter illumination lights, they are just magnificent. The crab market is located outside the main seafood wholesale market, filled with seafood restaurants serving all things seafood, but especially plenty of Hokkaido crab. Ume e dou Restaurant - After walking around for a while, we chose to eat at Ume e dou Restaurant, a small and friendly seafood restaurant on the main road, with a number of tanks full of a variety of different Japanese crabs. I really wanted to try both the red king crab and a Japanese hanasaki crab, so we tried them both. Both the crabs were first boiled, then for the red king crab (also known as an Alaskan king crab from the Bering Sea), they cut half of it and put it on the grill. The crab was absolutely sensational, a crab meal dream come true for any crab lover. The hanasaki crab was more about the roe, and the meat was sweet, but with a bitter complexion. The red king crab was the sweet, stringy flesh you dream about. Both crabs were incredibly tasty and fresh, and it was fun to compare them side to side. Total price - 34,000 JPY ($304.86) for everything (5 adults ate this) Melon - 300 JPY ($2.69) - Sapporo seafood market is also known for fruits and vegetables, and a cold piece of melon was delicious after the crab. Kaisen-Ichiba Kitano Gourmet - Finally, one of the most famous seafood restaurants in Sapporo is Kaisen-Ichiba Kitano Gourmet, really a seafood palace consisting of a fresh seafood market and restaurant. We headed to their restaurant and I had a mixed seafood donburi rice bowl. The seafood was fresh and vibrant, and quite good. Price - 3,210 JPY ($28.78) for my bowl If you love seafood and especially crab, Hokkaido is a great island to visit in Japan. Right in Sapporo, don’t miss the seafood market for incredibly fresh crabs! Otaru is a small port town on the island of Hokkaido in Japan, that’s known for its abundance of delicious and fresh seafood. So during my trip to Sapporo, I knew it was one day trip we didn’t want to miss. Sapporo Station - To get to Otaru from Sapporo, you can take the JR train from Sapporo Station. It cost me 640 JPY ($5.73) and the ride took about 45 minutes or so. Sankaku Market Seafood Market - Just outside the Otaru train station and to the left hand side as you exit, you’ll find Sankaku Market, a small and very friendly fresh seafood market selling an abundance of Hokkaido seafood delicacies like uni (sea urchin). There are some very famous seafood rice bowl restaurants, but you’ll also find different fish, and fresh King crabs and hairy crabs. I took one walk through the seafood market, but then settled on the first shop - mainly because they owners were so friendly and welcoming. Kawashima Shop - This the the seafood shop at the market we ate lunch at, and I would highly recommend it. The owners and staff were all very friendly, and the seafood was fresh and incredible. Hakkaku (sailfin poacher fish) - 1,000 JPY ($8.96) - Along with uni, one of the things I wanted to eat in Otaru was Hakkaku, which is a sailfin poacher fish. It’s look very unique, and it prepared as sashimi. It was delicious. Uni don (sea urchin bowl) - 4,500 JPY ($40.31) - But the real dish I came all the way to Otaru to eat was a full uni don, sea urchin rice bowl. First a layer of rice went down, then a couple of shiso leaves, then a full bed, and entire box of fresh vibrantly yellow sea urchin (uni). It was outstanding. I’ve had sea urchin many times before, but usually it’s just a couple pieces of sushi, this was an entire bowl full, and it was insanely delicious. Hairy crab (horsehair crab) - 6,500 JPY ($58.23) - Finally, just because I had never had a hairy or horsehair crab, I decided to get a fresh crab. Horsehair crabs are all about the roe inside, and it’s complex and flavorful. This was an amazing day of Japanese food in Otaru, the highlight for me was the seafood market, and it’s well worth a visit when you are in Hokkaido. Patreon - 🤍 T-Shirts - 🤍 With only a week or so left in my Japan trip, I set out to finally make the trip to the northern island of Hokkaido. In all of the times I have been to Japan, I never actually made it out there. So, I decided to go all the way to the northernmost tip of the country using my JR Rail Pass. First up, I left Saitama and headed to Omiya Station, where I would take the Hayabusa train on the Tohoku Hokkaido Shinkansen bullet train to the first Japanese city opened to trade called Hakodate. But first I had to take the train, which passed through Morioka, the city where I did a homestay in high school. Then, the train went through the Seikan Tunnel, which is a 20 plus mile tunnel that goes under the Tsugaru Strait. Upon arriving in Shin Hakodate Hokuto Station, I took another train to Hakodate Station, where I could get off and walk to Mt. Hakodate, a small mountain that has a ropeway up where you can see an amazing view of the city. The city was covered in snow and was like a whole different season compared to Tokyo, it actually felt like winter. I walked through the city and eventually made my way onto the ropeway... Continuing my journey to the northernmost point of Japan, I headed up the ropeway to Mt. Hakodate. It was a short ride up, and it was freezing cold. From the top, I could see Hakodate Bay and the city of Hakodate sprawled out. I could also see the main island of Japan, Honshu in the distance and could get a visceral sense of how far underwater we traveled in the bullet train under the Tsugaru Strait. I ended up not staying for the night view, even though it was supposed to be amazing because I was tired and cold, and still had to make it to the train to get to Sapporo by nighttime, where my hostel was located. So I headed down and explored the city. There was a district filled with old churches, and I saw lots of them, it was very interesting. I also learned that Hakodate was the first city opened to trade in Japan after admiral Perry arrived in the country. Afterwards, I walked back to Hakodate Station where I took another train to Shin Hakodate Hokuto Station, and then finally took a train 3 hours north to Sapporo, where I would be staying for the night.
