Kairouan is a city in northern Tunisia’s inland desert. It became a powerful trading hub and center of Islamic scholarship in the 9th century, when Aghlabid emirs ruled Kairouan and built many of its monuments. The Great Mosque, on the edge of the medina, with its antique columns and imposing minaret, dates from this period and is a major pilgrimage site. For Muslims, 7 trips here are said to equal one hajj to Mecca.
Kairouan is the holiest city in Tunisia, the Great Mosque beating at its core. The atmospheric city streets of the medina surrounding it provide a peaceful opportunity for strolling and exploration. ► Save Money On Airbnb Using My Link ►►► 🤍 ► INSTAGRAM ►►► 🤍 ► FACEBOOK ►►► 🤍 ► SUBSCRIBE ►►► 🤍 Get My Equipment: ► Canon EOS M50 (Main Camera) ►►► 🤍 ► RØDE VideoMic Pro + (Microphone) ►►► 🤍 ► ZHIYUN Crane Plus (Gimbal) ►►► 🤍 ► GoPro Hero 7 Black ►►► 🤍 #kairouan #tunisia #islam

After a couple of days in Tunis, we headed a little bit further south to the UNESCO Heritage town of Kairouan. Kairouan was founded in 670 and is considered by many to be the 4th holiest city of Islam, after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. We spent two days exploring and eating in Kairouan, and while there wasn't a great abundance of food to try, this was compensated for by the food we did have being amazing, and the sites of Kairouan being truly spectacular! This video also marks the end of our Tunisia series. Thank you to all the Tunisian people we met, the hospitalty and warmth we were greeted with made this trip truly special! Founded in 670, Kairouan flourished under the Aghlabid dynasty in the 9th century. Despite the transfer of the political capital to Tunis in the 12th century, Kairouan remained the Maghreb's principal holy city. Its rich architectural heritage includes the Great Mosque, with its marble and porphyry columns, and the 9th-century Mosque of the Three Gates. Source: UNESCO TV / © NHK Nippon Hoso Kyokai URL: 🤍

Travel video about destination Kairouan in Tunisia. Kairouan is the only great Tunisian city whose history is more recent than antiquity. In 671 A.D. a camp known as a 'Kairouan' settled on what is the city's urban area of today and despite the heat and scarcity of water this location had great strategic value. The massive minaret of the Great Mosque is 35 metres high and is the most important Islamic building in Tunis. For many years it has been the structural model for subsequent generations of Maurice architects. The ancient columns and elegant decoration of the mosque's interior highlight its importance in the Islamic world. Two further buildings that are important to Islam are situated on the North Western outskirts of Kairouan: the Barbier Mosque and the Sidi Sahab Mausoleum which date back to the 17th century. They are located above the grave of a companion of the Prophet Mohammed. In addition to Mecca, Medina And Jerusalem, Kairouan is one of the four most important cities in Islam and since it was first established during the 7th century, the city's life has been continuously determined by religious faith. We are in Tunisia to explore two of the major architectural monuments, the Great Mosque of Kairouan and the Roman Ruins of Sbeitla. Our first stop is Kairouan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and important pilgrimage destination. In fact, it is the 4th most holy destination in the Muslim faith for its architectural masterpiece, the Great Mosque of Kairouan which dates back to 670 AD, making it one of the oldest mosques. The walled medina is also famous for being the filming location of the 1981 film Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark. Next, we visit a carpet shop where we explore the Berber and Tunisian carpets, a hand-made traditional craft in Tunisia. Sbeitla (aka Sufetula and in Arabic سبيطلة ) is a city in north-central Tunisia where we find the best-preserved Roman forum temples in Northern Africa. It was the entry point of the Muslim conquest of North Africa. The archeological site is massive and we explore the forum, baths, and theater. The Great Mosque of Kairouan was unfortunately closed to non-muslims due to prayer time but we got a brilliant view on top of the market!
Kairouan, one of the most celebrated cities of the Islamic world, captivates visitors with the unique charm of its medina
In this episode, we retrace some of the best preserved sites of ancient Rome. We leave early in the morning in direction of the archaeological site of Dougga, located at approximately 112 kilometers from the city of Tunis. The way will take us a little less than two hours. The landscape is spectacular the region being very hilly and fertile. Dougga is an ancient Numidian city that came under Punic rule before being reconquered by the Numidian Berber king Massinissa around 200 BC. Dougga was integrated into the Roman Empire after the battle of Thapsus in 46 BC. Situated on the ancient road, halfway between the metropolis Carthage and the garrison of Theueste, the current Tebessa in Algeria, the city developed rapidly. The Punics seized the place because of the quality of the fertile lands of the place and the region would have even ensured the supply of wheat to Rome. You can still see the remains of the temple of Neptune, but especially that of Saturn which preserves some columns. Although little remains of the hippodrome and the Temple of Minerva, one can still see the remains of the Roman cisterns that today house some of the remains of the site. The ruins of Dougga are impressive and the landscape is breathtaking. We come across the Temples of Mercury, Augustus and Fortune, as well as residential areas. But Dougga's surprise is to find there a Forum and a nearly intact Capitol, a mecca of Roman civic life. The view from the building is exceptional over the entire region and forms the heart of an almost completely reconstructed city. After our visit of the archeological site classified by Unesco since 1997, we set course for Kairouan, the religious heart of Tunisia. The journey is 148 kilometers on country roads, a journey of more than two hours. Kairouan which was the first Arab city in North Africa. According to historians, al-Qayrawân would be a word of Persian origin which probably refers to the caravanserai. Thus, the camp of the Muslim conquerors became their capital in the 7th century. This is why it is often said that Kairouan is the fourth holiest city in Islam, the holiest city in the Maghreb. Today, it is a city of 140 000 inhabitants famous for its wool carpets and pastries. The Great Mosque is probably the most beautiful legacy of this period. A visit to this grandiose building is a must for the tourist in Tunisia. You should moreover cross many of them during your visit. The city of Kairouan is also known for its huge water basins built in the 8th century under the Umayyads. The Barber's Mosque, known as the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahab, is a Tunisian zawiya located in Kairouan, outside the walls of the medina. #Kairouan #Dougga #Tunisia #Maghreb #Mosque Réalisation : Nicolas Asselin Montage : Nicolas Asselin Production : Nicolas Asselin #NicolasAsselin
Kairouan - jedno z najważniejszych miast islamu, po Mekce, Medynie Jerozolimie i Damaszku Kairouan (Arabic القيروان) (also known as Kirwan, Al Qayrawan), is the capital of the Kairouan Governorate in Tunisia. Referred to as the Islamic Cultural Capital, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city was founded by the Arabs around 670. In the period[citation needed] of Caliph Mu'awiya (reigned 661-680), it became an important centre for Islamic and Quranic learning, and thus attracting a large number of Muslims from various parts of the world, next only to Mecca and Medina. The holy Mosque of Uqba is situated in the city. It is considered by many Muslims to be Islam's fourth holiest city.
