I'm comparing the Boss OD-3 Overdrive, SD-1 Super Overdrive and BD-2 Blues Driver overdrive pedals. Which do you prefer? Let me know in the comments. I did this comparison to help me decide which Boss Overdrive pedal I prefer. I thought other players might find it useful when trying to decide which pedal to buy. I know there are LOADS of other Boss overdrive pedals that I'm not covering, but let me explain why I narrowed it down to just these three. There are other current production Boss drive pedals like the BC-2, ST-2 and OD-1X but they are all digital pedals and while that's not a bad thing by any means I simply wanted to stick to analog overdrive pedals for this video. There are also the modified Waza Craft versions, the SD-1W and BD-2W that many people might prefer but I decided to stick with just the stock versions because I feel if you understand how the stock versions of these pedals sound first, then you can better decide after that if you might prefer a modified version. As for the many great out of production overdrive pedals that Boss have made, I'm afraid I'm just sticking to the current production models in this video. It used to be that there was but a modest handful of predominantly yellow, green and black boxes from which to select your overdriver. It was easy, and pretty cheap. Now there are hundreds and hundreds of pedals at all prices, all claiming to be the ‘best’ version of this, that or the other. Where do you start? Let’s break it down. Today we’re talking about the ‘normal’, ubiquitous overdrive pedal: those that use an opamp and clipping circuit in the style of Tube Screamers, Rats, Bluesbreakers, Boss ODs, Klons etc etc etc… Yes, there are other ways to do it, but this is by far the most prevalent. We talk about gain, clipping types – hard and soft clipping, asymmetric/symmetric – EQ and headroom as the broad topics of discussion. BOSS Super overdrive Vs. Blues driver, I've had the Boss Super overdrive SD-1 and the Boss BD-2 Blues driver for a while now and wanted to show the differences in this video between the two amazing overdrives. The SD-1 super overdrive guitar pedal is modelled on the original Tube screamer circuit and was released in 1988, there have been a few variations of the pedal as well. CLARIFICATION ON THE BROWNE AMPLIFICATION PROTEIN DUAL Erm, I say in the video (Mick here) that this is inspired by a Nobels ODR-1 on the green side (correct) and a Boss BD-2 Blues Driver on the blue side (not correct). It's actually a Marshall Bluesbreaker. Seems that everyone is confused, because's Browne's site mentions the 'Blue pedal used by John Mayer during Continuum'. Mr Mayer definitely had a Boss BD-2 at that time, and it's blue. He also had a Marshall Bluesbreaker apparently... which is black. Please forgive the confusion! Either way, the nice people at Browne got in touch and confirmed it is inspired by an original Marshall Bluesbreaker. Two of the most-loved overdrive pedals of all time. How do they stand up in a band mix? Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ timings below. Welcome to the show! Yes, one is green and one is yellow and some people think that’s the only difference between these two stalwarts of overdrive pedal history. As we find out in this video however, they can sound and feel quite different. Which one would you choose? Let’s find out… Massive thanks to Dougie Mussard for being such a wonderful human and even better drummer. How did we record the band? The drums are mic’d in the Glyn Johns method (Neumann TLM102 as the overheads), plus an extra snare mic (Beyerdynamic M201) underneath. The bass is DI’d via an Ampeg SVT DI (full bass rig below), the guitar cabs are mic’d as usual (with Austrian Audio OC18), plus our stereo room mics (AKGC414XL). There’s plenty of spill all around the mics in the room. Everything hits our UA Apollo interfaces for recording and I mixed it (Mick here) using Universal Audio Luna. The number #1 most common mistake a lot of people using overdrive make is explained in this video. One of your instincts when setting the level for the perfect lead volume is to essentially tweak the controls on the pedal rather than turn the amplifier up! You get a much better sound using the amp's volume rather than the pedals volume. You can of course set it however works best for you. In my experience, I have found if I need more volume rather than turning up the pedal, I turn up the amplifier. This gives me a much warmer, rounder, fuller sound with more dynamics and less compression.
