The Central Asian Pamir Highway has many surprises in store for its travelers. Our journey will take us some 1,300 kilometers, beginning in Tajikistan, then down the River Panj along the border with Afghanistan, and on to Kyrgyzstan. Along the way, we meet interesting people willing to tell us their stories, from homestay hosts and instrument builders to women running their homesteads in the absence of their husbands. Breathtaking 7,000-meter mountains named after communist heroes are the backdrop for our adventurous trip over incredible mountain passes. At 4,000 meters we meet young people en route to China, at 5,000 meters we camp with nomads. In Kyrgyzstan, we happen upon an incredible park dedicated to important thinkers, scientists, and religious tolerance. Overall, this is a journey for the eye as well as for the mind! Two thirty-somethings have quit their jobs to travel the world. The Pamir mountains towered around us as we crossed into Tajikistan and climbed mountain passes over 4500M and into the most inspiring high altitude landscape. As far as the eye could see, we were the only car in sight along the Pamir Highway and through the Wakhan corridor, bordering Afghanistan. This was our most rugged and epic road trip. Tajikistan far exceeded our expectations! In this video we tackle the Pamir Highway and Zorkul National Park on our DR650 motorcycles. Having just left Kyrgyzstan we had heard that Tajikistan was no where near as beautiful. Well, that is an absolute crock!! In this video we find a route that is without doubt one of the most beautiful we have ever experienced. As we entered the country from the Border of Kyrgyzstan we hit Lake Karakul, a stunning mountain lake sitting just shy of 4000m in altitude where we set up camp for the night. Not only is the scenery beautiful, but the people are as well – A local guy walked down and joined us for dinner and to just have a chat. Unfortunately, James wasn’t feeling all that great, so he retreated to his tent. The next morning, we hit the Pamir highway. Some people say it is the greatest road trip in the world and it is easy to see why – Surrounded by snow cap mountains and along a sprawling desert this place is a motorcyclist’s dream. We found our next campsite using iOverlander and once again we were blown away with the scenery and then 3 local guys showed up and gave us some home-made bread. Everyone in Tajikistan seem to be incredibly generous and friendly. From there we had to go to Mughab to pick up some supplies before venturing into the Zorkul National Park. Talk about the road-less-travelled! It is days like these that make this trip so special and the whole reason we did it in the first place. You feel like you are on another planet, and you truly are in the middle of nowhere. Starting off in arid plains that resemble mars, you then hit green rolling hills weaving between soaring mountains. And once again we are waved down by some locals, and they invite us into their home and give us food and tea and then as we are leaving, they offer us some bread to take on the road with us. It honestly restores our faith in humanity. If only the rest of the world were as hospitable as the people of Tajikistan. That night we camped just next to the Pamir River, right on the border of Afghanistan with beautiful views of the Wakhan Corridor only to wake up the next morning in a foot of snow. Over night a storm hit leaving us feeling like we were on the inside of a ping pong ball. But we had to jump back on the bikes and try get out of there which was an adventure all on its own. This video spans just 4 days but it has enough adventure to last a lifetime. A part of this motorcycle tour that we will never forget. In 2018 we set off from Australia on our Suzuki DR650 motorcycles riding overland to England. We hope to travel to remote areas riding dirt roads whilst camping and meeting local people along the adventure. My plan is: take no highways, ride off-road when possible, wild camp and stay with the locals as much as you can and try to rock climb in every country. PAMIR HIGHWAY - TAJIKISTAN - Second highest highway in the world! The Pamir Highway is not your regular Highway. This highway (if you can call it a highway) crosses Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan and has a length of over 1,200 km. It is the only continuous route through the difficult terrain of the Pamir mountains and is the main supply route. It goes all the way up to a stunning 4655m, being the second highest highway in the world. Some parts are washed away from land slides and rain, flooded rivers, extreme potholes or heavy traffic. PEAK LENIN - Winter in Summer Going towards Peak Lenin base camp was quite an experience. I helped out two stranded locals with a broken motorcycle to eventually arrive at the base camp at about 4000m. there, I could enjoy an amazing view of the Peak Lenin and its surrounding glaciers and peaks. I made some dinner and prepared for a cold night. The next morning I was greeted with a thick layer of snow covering my tent and the whole landscape. This server as a fantastic photographies opportunity. Chinese's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Going back down the valley I go to Sari Tash to prepare for the China crossing. I meet up with 12 other motorcycle riders since crossing China on your own is near impossible. The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous region is one of Chinese's most western cities. It's mainly a Muslim occupied region, which the Chinese don't really like, so they suppress them heavily: heavy security, restrictions and ridiculous laws. Consequently, the government doesn't really like tourists to wander around and observe what's happening. Therefore we needed to have a guide and follow a pre planned-itinerary. KARAKORAM HIGHWAY - Highest Highway in the world Leaving Kasghar, we start riding onto the Karakoram Highway, one of the most iconic and highest highways in the world, going all the way to the south of Pakistan, crossing several big rivers and high mountain passes. In this episode of We Are Adventure Riders, we arrive in GEORGIA! We spend the first couple of days riding and wild camping as we make our way towards the capital, Tbilisi. On the way we stop at Borjomi to taste the famous mineral water and begin exploring the Georgian culture and cuisine. Upon arriving in Tbilisi, we had a clear mission - find a way to reach the Pamir Highway! To ride further East, we would either need to cross through Azerbaijan to reach the Caspian sea and take the ferry across, or head North through Russian then East through Kazakhstan - but both routes had difficulties... So while exploring the beautiful and relaxing city of Tbilisi, the four of us were researching, planning, making phone calls, and visiting embassies. Will we find a way to reach the Pamir Highway? Riding in Tajikistan on the Pamir Highway and through the Wakhan Valley. Traveling motorbike around the world. After a night at Karakul Lake we head all the way back to Khoroch down the Pamir Highway where we take a left turn from the M41 Silk road into the Wakhan Valley. Again we're riding next to a wide river bordering Afghanistan. The road starts out a bit boring being tarmac,wide and when there is none lots of corrugations. We've been spoiled in the Bartang valley and I know it. Second half of the Wakhan is great, wild and at some point you could walk across to Afghanistan if you wanted to. Meet riders and cyclists along the way. In the evening reach the Pamir Highway again and start running out of fuel. Make it with the last drop to Alichur. Last ride through Murghab and past Karakul Lake again but this time straight to Kyrgyz. The sun is setting and those final moments in Tajikistan feel like something surreal. A special experience which I appreciated only more as time passed by. Already I started to think about time and unfortunately these were the final days of not thinking too much about time. We hired a Landcruiser and driver in Dushanbe and spent 16 days journeying to Osh in the second half of August. I rode solo from the UK and skirted around the boarder of China on my trusty Yamaha XT660Z! Camping every night under the Milkyway in deserts, mountain ranges and next to lakes. Crossing Europe, Turkey, Gerogia, Russia, Kazahkstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Dropping by Cappadoccia, Saint trinity church in the Cauccuss mountains, Chechnya, Dagastan, old towns of Uzkbekistan then onto the Pamir highway crossing Tajikistan via the AMAZING Bartang Valley! Then Riding onto the lakes of Kyrgyzstan such as Song kol and Kol Suu/Kel Suu. Der Pamir Highway ist der schwierigste und spannendste Teil unserer bisherigen Reise. Nicht nur für uns, sondern auch für das Auto ist es eine Grenzerfahrung, die wir so schnell nicht vergessen werden. Nachdem wir die tadschikische Grenze überquert haben, steigen wir schnell auf 4500m auf. Das Klima wird rauer und lebensfeindlicher. Staunend schauen wir aus dem Fenster, während der Wind vor unserem Camper heult. Auf dieser Höhe raucht unser Camper wie ein alter Schiffsdiesel und der Motor kämpft damit, nicht auszugehen. Das Auto und wir schieben uns mit Schrittgeschwindigkeit am Grenzzaun des Riesenreiches China entlang - ein Sandsturm tobt. Wir entdecken hellblaue Seen und tapfere Menschen, die in kleinen Hütten den widrigen Bedingungen der Natur trotzen. Dafür zollen wir ihnen Respekt. Der Pamir startet in Kirgisistan und führt uns über 1.200 Kilometer durch eine der höchsten Bergketten unserer Erde. An der afghanischen Grenze verweilen wir einige Tage. Viel haben wir im Fernsehen über dieses Land gesehen, meist nichts Gutes. Jetzt stehen wir an ihren Pforten und alles scheint so friedlich. Nur ein Fluss trennt uns von der harten Realität der Menschen auf der anderen Seite. Mit jedem Meter, den wir wieder runterfahren, wünsche ich mir stehen zu bleiben und einen tiefen Atemzug zu nehmen. Wir und das Auto bekommen mit jedem Höhenmeter besser Luft. Endlich ein neues Video und dieses Mal aus Tadschikistan vom Pamir Highway, auch M41 genannt. Marcella ist vor drei Wochen in der Hauptstadt Kirgisistans angekommen. Was ist in den letzten Wochen passiert? Na ja, sehr viel! Wir sind mehr als 1.000 km gefahren, die meiste Zeit in den Bergen, die meiste Zeit auf mehr als 4.000m Höhe. Wir hatten einige verdammt kalte Nächte ohne laufende Heizung, genossen heiße Quellen und erkundeten alte sowjetische Observatorien im Niemandsland. Wir fuhren 90 km/h auf staubigen Schotterstraßen, verbrannten uns die Nase in der Sonne und sahen Netflix irgendwo im Nirgendwo. Alltag und eine verrückte Erfahrung zugleich. Die letzte große Etappe ist mit dem Pamir Highway gestartet und ich kann es kaum erwarten, wieder herzukommen. Der UAZ hat einige Probleme gemacht, sich aber auch unter diesen Umständen wacker geschlagen. The inhabitants call it "crown of the earth". I was invited to a private home in the first picture. The host said that I can stay as much as I want but I chose "only" two days. On the second day in the morning,I've heard that "I should go now". I was surprised and packed all my stuff up and cycled off. The host saw me from the distance and call: "Why are you leaving?" A language misunderstanding. The Russian language is his second and my third. I stayed. The Tajik wedding. Men eat separately, women separately. I liked most the music band, but I'm preparing separately videos about each country. I'm sleeping at home in front of the wedding today. This house has a door tied to a string. In fact, all homes are open. After 100 km the first small village Aliciur which isn't on the map even. They are just cutting the ram's throat and I am helping them to flay the skin. We bring in lumps of salt (which initially seem to me like snow) from a nearby lake for other rams to make them fat. After an evening walk I can't find the house where I've stayed. The atmosphere is aggravated by the great dogs chasing the yaks (animals appearing in Pamir and Tibet similar to cows and buffalo). I enter the center of Pamir: Khorog town. The car stops and three Tajiks come out of it: "We'll lift you". I didn't notice the fourth who sat in the front and was not nice at all. The others called him "director". The fourth one demands that I sell him a bike. Consternation, I'm ready for everything. Suddenly, the director fainted and others pull him out of the car and pour water. It turns out that director doesn't walk because he has an electric shock and they take him to the hospital (first photo already on a stretcher.) When I ask the first person at the hospital for a hotel - he invites me to his house. Pamir Highway is located along the Tajik-Afghan border for many miles. I sleep in a house on the river and on the other side an Afghan in a turban rides on the motorbike and children go to a clay school. I meet a girl on the Tajik bank (first photo) whose occupation during the day is collecting small fruits from the tree that fall when the wind blows only. I'm flooding her with questions like a true virtuoso to get residual answers in mixed Russian and English. I am cycling 100 km following the river with an abyss and I have rocks hanging over my head. There are the tombstones of people who died here every few kilometers regularly. It was explained to me that these people are falling into the abyss because of a car breakdown. Fortunately, because I was afraid that it was falling rocks and avalanches. I met an interpreter from Belgium who has been traveling by bicycle for several months with a saxophone on his back. The first crisis because nobody invited me to sleep in the house in this small village. I could put a tent close to the stream like a German girl which I met but I chose the "hotel" for £2. This is a barrack with the poster of the president (dictator who ruled for 20 years) and access to electricity. The situation could happen once for forty days, but it seems to me that Pamir is just about to end because 200 miles of mountains remain only. These people here sell a compote/homemade tea on the road and they have business thinking. In addition,I had to repair the bike which makes the word crisis is justified. I am prepared for this extreme situation from the beginning by carrying small vodka and canned fish. I sleep in the mosque because it seems to me more exciting than the Guesthouse, which costs £1 here. I pour myself water if I encounter streams to survive the heat of 40'C. This is not my patent because I noticed that Tajik women are pouring on each other buckets of cold water before the trip. I am at the border market in Tadzykistan where for a moment they open the border/bridge and people from Afghanistan come and sell grapes. The soldiers make sure they don't go any further. Local people talk about them: it's not surprising that they become fighters when Nato drops a bomb on the house and kills almost the whole family. When they give me goat meat and honey, there are plenty of bees and giant Asian wasps around me. On my way from Austria to Mongolia, i passed the legendary Pamir Highway in Tajikistan. It was already autumn and for me the best time- no mosquitos and perfect weather. (10-16.09.2019) It was a lifetime experience and i would do it again. Enjoy🤘
🤍 We finally arrived in Tajikistan. This video is the first part of it. Tajikistan and especially the Pamir Highway have been on my "motorcycle bucket list" since I got my license :) It`s an paradise for every motorcycle adventurer :) There are two ways to approach the Pamir Highway, the north and the south route. The north route is much more off-roady and more difficult. Of course we decided to take the hard way. 3-5 kilometers before the north and the south road were merging we had to turn back because it was not passible to go up the pass due to the wet clay there. After dropping the bike 5 times we decided to go back to Dushanbe and take the south road. Lucky for you (and us) we will see both Pamir roads ;) BTW people in the village told us that just 2 days before they had to evacuate a KTM 1190 Adventure from this pass. So I thing the little Honda did a great job :) Ich wollte schon immer Tadschikistan und vor allem die Pamirstrasse besuchen. Das hier ist der erste Teil davon. Es gibt zwei Optionen die Pamirstrasse bis nach Kirgistan zu durchqueren. Eine Nord- und eine Südstrasse. Die Nordstrasse ist anspruchsvoller und schöner als die Südstrasse. Also haben wir uns natürlich für die schwierigere entschieden. Nach 2 Tagen Fahrt und kurz vor der Gablung wo die Nord und Südstrasse zusammenkommen mussten wir umdrehen. Es hat davor mehrere Tage geregnet und der Pass bestand aus Lehm. Nach dem 5 Mal hinfallen haben wir uns entschieden zurückzufahren und die Südstrasse zu nehmen. Es war wirklich nicht möglich auf den Pass hochzukommen (man konnte nicht mal laufen ohne hinzufahren) :/ dafür werden wir jetzt aber beide Routen sehen :) Übrigens haben uns Leute aus dem Dorf erzählt, dass zwei Tage davor eine KTM 1190 Adventure auf diesem Pass abgeschleppt werden musste, deshalb hat sich die kleine Honda eigentlich ganz gut geschlagen. Я уже всегда очень хотел посетить Таджикистан и особенно Памирский Трак. Есть 2 пути, северный и южный. Северный тяжелея и красивее и мы решили попробовать. Мосле двух дней езды и за пару километров до соединения северной дороги с южной нам пришлось разворачиватся и ехать назад потому что был дождь и этот последний пасс состоял из глины.
