De Saab 9-3 Viggen is vernoemd naar de Saab 37 Viggen straaljager. Dat schepte hoge verwachtingen. Eind jaren negentig kwam hij op de markt met een smaakvol spoilerpakket, veel pk's en onstuimige rijeigenschappen. Inmiddels is het een zeldzame én kostbare youngtimer. In een nieuwe aflevering van Peters Proefrit neemt Autovisie-testredacteur Peter Hilhorst je mee in een van de hoogtepunten uit de mooie Saab-historie. Now I always knew Swedish Air Force fighters were designed for short field and rough terrain takeoffs and landings from improvised runways, but I never knew quite how capable they really were. The Saab 37 Viggen shows that capability off here with a STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing). For a Cold War fighter that is more than 50 years old, it was very impressive to witness for the first time. Especially considering the Saab 37 Viggen is neither small nor light. I really was blown away. Oh, and taxiing backwards? Super cool. This was the very first display performed by this two-seat Viggen, after spending nearly a decade in the hangar since its retirement from service in the Swedish Air Force in 2007. While the most well-known Cold War-era military jet aircraft came from Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union, Sweden quietly developed what would become the most advanced fighter jet in Europe at the time. The Saab 37 Viggen was a mighty machine with a name that alluded to millennia-old Norse mythology, and it was easily recognizable as it was the first canard design aircraft produced in quantity. The historic aircraft could fly steadily at speeds above Mach 2 at high altitudes and operate from short runways, ready to serve their home country at a moment’s notice. And despite Sweden maintaining a strict policy of neutrality at the height of the Cold War, its pilots were willing to risk their lives to do the right thing if a nuclear conflict with Russia were to explode, with their Viggens more than ready for battle… - Join Dark Skies as we explore the world of aviation with cinematic short documentaries featuring the biggest and fastest airplanes ever built, top-secret military projects, and classified missions with hidden untold true stories. Swedish Saab 37 Viggen: The Fighter Jet Built For A War With Russia Hello everyone, welcome back to the military update channel. The Viggen was a fighter in every sense of the world, and was armed with a 30mm Oerlikon KCA cannon, and was also fitted with six underwing/under-fuselage hardpoints, which could be used to carry air-to-air and air-to-surface ordnance that initially included the Rb04E or Rb05A missiles for the attack, and Rb27, Rb28 and Rb324 missiles for defense. I finally managed to get a new video camera (Sony FDR-AX100), so I just made this video at the "AIRPOWER16" airshow in austria. Best airshow I have seen so far. The only problem were whining kids. Love these swedish cold war era jet fighters/bombers.

Among Christmases, Birthdays, Hockey games and other regular family stuff - I found some really unique VHS recordings that my father made during his time as a fighter pilot in SwAF. This week I had the pleasure of driving a 2000 Saab 9-3 Viggen, a Swedish beast of a sports sedan!! Originally intended to battle the best from Germany *cough cough* the M3, it still stands to show us that the Swedes know a thing or two about a fun driving experience! Featuring a 2.3L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine, and only offered with a manual, it has all the ingredients of a sporty driving experience! Perfect? It is not, but it does offer a rather balanced package, and an affordable one as well. With just over 150k miles on the clock, this bad boy was recently picked up by its new owner for about $6,200! The Saab J37 made history: During its nearly twenty-five years in service, the Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird” set numerous speed records, and on July 28, 1976, the aircraft reached an amazing 2,193.167 miles per hour (3,529.56 km/h). Flying at roughly 36.55 miles per minute or 3,216.4 feet per second, it was faster than a bullet fired from the World War II-era M1 Garand rifle – which had a muzzle velocity of 2,800 feet per second. The SR-71 earned a reputation that no aircraft could catch it, and that it could even outrun missiles. While a dozen were lost due to accidents, no Blackbird was ever shot down by the enemy. In fact, only one aircraft even has the distinction of achieving a radar lock on the fast-flying United States Air Force reconnaissance plane. It wasn’t a Soviet interceptor such as the MiG-25 however, but rather the Swedish-made Saab J37 Viggen fighter that successfully achieved a missile lock and visual contact with the speedy spy plane.
Between 2000 and 2002, Swedish Rallycross legend Per Eklund took the challenge of conquering Pikes Peak at the wheel of SAAB based machines. In 2002 he used the most extreme version ever built of the 9-3 model, with spaceframed chassis weighing only 950Kg and with the SAAB 2.0 Turbocharged engine producing almost 800Hp depending on boost levels. In the end, it won the Unlimited class with a 11:13.24 chrono marking an important step in the veteran´s career.
