Don't expect this to be easy. If you want to move into backbends but don't feel flexible this is the perfect practice to start with. Do this once a week for at least a month and then see how you feel. Here are some beginner friendly back stretches that can help you work towards your bridge. Now. If you are rushing to the keyboard to correct me that this is called a wheel pose or back bend or what ever than I congratulate you. Which ever back ground you are from you are probably right but this is really not the point here. I am sure the ancient generations who didn't have proper language developed yet already had a grunt to describe back bending. Focusing on the more important part of this post, the actual training, keep in mind that this is not a complete workout. Please make sure to warm up well and to do your injury prevention exercises and back conditioning work. Warm up well. Use proper form. Make them gains.

The golden rules of back bending Spending most of my life as a professional performer back bending has been a part of every day life for longer than I can remember. Going on stage every single day is a beautiful thing that gives you a great reason to stay healthy and in shape. Yet it also forces you to be ready to perform 6 days a week. As a professional athlete you max out every so many month for a competition. As a performer you are asked to show at least 85% of your abilities up to 3 times a day. In my case trying to feed my ego it’s obviously gotta be at least 98%. Usually attempting to show 110 ;) Now this also means that I have to bend backwards on a daily showing Mexican handstands and one arm flags. This comes easy when you are in a show somewhere warm and tropical but becomes significantly harder when living or working on a colder climate like for example Montreal winter. The topic of back bending is long and deep and it is impossible to sum everything up in 1 short post but here is a quick list of what has always been most essential for me, my fellow performers and for my clients in order to have a flexible, strong and especially healthy back. A wall can be useful to work on backbends with control. My top tips : 1. Draw your lower belly in to activate the deep core and protect your lower back from pain. 2. Keep breathing, and do not hold your breath. Backbends have an activating effect on the nervous system and it is easy to lose control over the breath. Stay focused. 3. Keep your arms and legs parallel if possible. Avoid bending the elbows. Push through the hands, straighten the arms, and if you feel the opening more in the chest. 4. Walk your hands up on the wall to come out of the pose or slowly lower down the top of the head on the mat (away from the wall). 5. Don’t rush to go all the way down for the first time. Backbends take time and require patience. You open up the vulnerable front part of the body. It’s a work with emotions, don’t push. I personally still find wheel pose very hard. If it is easy for you, walk your feet closer to your hands.
