Some people might ask "Who uses RAID in 2022?" to which I say "Who DOESN'T have the need for SPEED" (typed over my 10 gig fiber internet connection). But really, how fast does a RAID 0 array equipped with three 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD's perform? Well setting it all up was a real pain, but showing off the stupid fast benchmark numbers was super easy. *This video is sponsored by SK hynix, the maker of fastest-in-class SSDs. RAID is a technology that is used to increase the performance and/or reliability of data storage. The abbreviation stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. A RAID system consists of two or more drives working in parallel. These disks can be hard discs, but there is a trend to also use the technology for SSD (solid state drives). There are different RAID levels, each optimized for a specific situation. These are not standardized by an industry group or standardization committee. This explains why companies sometimes come up with their own unique numbers and implementations. This article covers the following RAID levels: RAID 0 – striping RAID 1 – mirroring RAID 5 – striping with parity RAID 6 – striping with double parity RAID 10 – combining mirroring and striping The software to perform the RAID-functionality and control the drives can either be located on a separate controller card (a hardware RAID controller) or it can simply be a driver. Some versions of Windows, such as Windows Server 2012 as well as Mac OS X, include software RAID functionality. Hardware RAID controllers cost more than pure software, but they also offer better performance, especially with RAID 5 and 6. RAID-systems can be used with a number of interfaces, including SCSI, IDE, SATA or FC (fiber channel.) There are systems that use SATA disks internally, but that have a FireWire or SCSI-interface for the host system. In this video I show you why I bought four 1TB WD Blue hard drives and placed them in a striped volume under Windows (or better known as a raid 0 configuration). Update: I added another drive because 4 of these drives were not enough to record 4K 60FPS smoothly. 4K 60FPS uncompressed recording needs at least 700MB/s writing capabilities. Error at 2:26 : That bitrate was the result of the GTX 1080 which could just not reach 60fps at 3860x2160 and set everything to ultra. I noticed later ingame it went no further than 54 or 55 fps. That explains why the overall bitrate of this video is slightly lower. Now (13-nov-2017) I have a GTX 1080-ti, but I also have another monitor. An Acer Predator 27" which can go up to 165hz at 1440p. The Ti gives me an fps of around 110-120 at this resolution, everything set to ultra. I think if I still had the 4K monitor that it would have reached 80 - 85 fps, but that monitor would not go further than 60 fps. That's the reason I bought a fifth drive to make sure I got enough write speed to record uncompressed. You can compress on the fly, which saves you a lot of diskspace and you also don't need such a fast raid configuration, but encoding on the fly is very demanding on the cpu and can do lots of framedrops during gameplay. So, it's the one or the other. I prefer raw speed so my CPU and GPU can focus all their attention properly displaying the game.

After everyone was calling my original benchmark video fake because no one was getting the performance boost I saw, I ran all of my benchmarks again and got nearly identical results to the first video. This time trying to show as much info as possible to prove it's not faked. I later found out that the cause of this giant performance boost is due to the RAID controller being optimized better on Windows 11. This is why most people with a single drive didn't see a similar increase in performance. In this video, these are both a clean install, all Windows updates completed so it's not running in the background, Steam is installed and running in the background the entire time because that's where I bought 3DMark, Nvidia 462.59 Studio driver installed. I did not swap my NVMe's for faster ones like suggested in my original video, I did not mess with settings because the time changed (both OS's had the wrong time out of the box so I showed this), both are on Balanced power profile, Windows 10 tests done WITH and WITHOUT TaskbarX installed. I even installed Cortana on Windows 11 to have the same background apps as Windows 10. This is how Windows 11 performs on RAID 0. Windows 10 get's nearly identical results to Windows 11 when the RAID controller is turned off and they are installed on each NVMe separately. A benchmark video on this is coming up next. Do you NEED NAS Hard Drives, Really? 🤍 Hard drives are not exactly new technology. They have existed in one form or another for over 20 years in the consumer market, all the time getting bigger in capacity and smaller in physical design. That should not come as a surprise to any of you. Such is the way of technology that no sooner have we got used to the way things are, then a brand of the manufacturer will turn around and bung on a new connector, introduce a faster and more expensive version, or worse, the entire industry changes it’s mind overnight and all our old technology becomes useless.
