Dams have long been the strategic card for the Chinese government. However, they are collapsing before they can have a chance to play them. China has about 94,000 dying dams, so the crisis isn't about a single dam. However, when the problem involves the world's biggest hydroelectric plant, there is every reason for China to worry about it. Not only China but also the entire world is waiting with bated breath regarding how the country will tackle this issue of mammoth stature. The difference between other dams in China and the three Gorges Dam is that most of the other dams were built during Mao Zedong's era, while the Three Gorges Dam is a recent build. So, it seems believable that the Mao-era dams must be decaying and on the verge of collapsing. However, what's surprising is that a dam that cost China a whopping $31 billion and became operational fairly recently could collapse. In recent days, Chongqing, located in the upstream region of the Three Gorges, has been repeatedly hit by torrential rain. The heavy rainfall has caused a rapid rise in river water levels, posing a risk of embankment breaches. The downpour has also triggered flash floods, landslides, and mudslides, resulting in severe damage to local houses. Among the affected areas, Wanzhou District has been hit the hardest. Wanzhou District in Chongqing is situated within the Three Gorges reservoir area. One of the excuses behind the CCP‘s construction of the Three Gorges Dam was to mitigate the disasters caused by torrential rain in this area. However, the dam has not only failed to fulfill its role in disaster mitigation but has exacerbated the impact of the heavy rainfall. After the impoundment of the Three Gorges Dam in June 2003, the Three Gorges Reservoir was formed upstream of the dam. The reservoir stretches approximately 600 kilometers in length, reaches a width of up to 2 kilometers, and covers an area of 10,000 square kilometers, submerging 129 towns. Since the impoundment, the Three Gorges Dam has caused numerous geohazards in a vast area along the Yangtze River and its tributaries, spanning from Chongqing to Yichang. In the first 11 months after the impoundment in 2003, there were a total of 4,688 collapses and landslides in the entire reservoir area. This was nearly double the 2,490 recorded in the entire year of 2001, within a span of just two years. Fan Xiao, Chief Engineer of the Regional Geological Survey Team of the Sichuan Geological and Mineral Bureau, has witnessed the occurrence of large-scale landslides multiple times in the Three Gorges reservoir area. He told reporters that every time the Three Gorges Reservoir is filled, there is a high occurrence period of geological hazards, which typically happens from September to November when the water level begins to rise, and from February to May the following year when water is discharged from the reservoir. According to Yin Yueping, Chief Scientist at the Geological Hazard Technical Guidance Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China, as of May 25, 2022, a total of 7,400 geological hazard points had been identified in the Three Gorges reservoir area. #threegorgesdam #chinaobserver #3Gorgesdam #geohazards All rights reserved.

The collapse of Two Dams in Inner Mongolia; Worst Fears have Come True According to the official website of the Ministry of Water Resources of China, between 8:00 p.m. on July 17th and 2:00 p.m. on July 18th, heavy to severe rainfall occurred in Morin Dawa Banner of Hulunbuir City, an Autonomous Region in Inner Mongolia. At 1:48 p.m. on July 18th, a dam collapsed at Yongan Reservoir on a tributary of the Nuomin River in Mo Banner; after the collapse of the dam, a large amount of floodwater rushed into Xinfa Reservoir 13 kilometers downstream, causing another dam to collapse at about 3:30 p.m. at Xinfa Reservoir, which has a capacity of 38 million Cubic Metres. According to mainland media reports, the people of the four downstream villages have been evacuated, and authorities have yet to announce casualty numbers. On the night of the 18th, the flood has merged into the mainstream of the Nuomin River. Flooding caused the G111 national highway in Mo Banner to collapse, causing road disruptions. Downstream villages and farmlands have been turned into a sea of water. It is reported that 16,660 people were affected by the dam breach, and 54,000 acres of farmland were flooded. The flood also destroyed 22 bridges, 124 culverts, 15.6 kilometers of highways, and 20 kilometers of road shoulders. From information on the web, we know that Xinfa Reservoir was built in 1958 and started operation in 1959. No information was found on Yongan Reservoir, but it’s said that the two reservoirs went through reinforcement and maintenance in 1997. According to 2021 statistics from the Ministry of Water Resources, there are 98,000 reservoirs in China, including 4,700 reservoirs with a capacity of 10 Million to 1 Billion cubic meters, and 94,000 reservoirs with a capacity of 100,000 to 10 million cubic meters. More than 80% of them were built in the 1950s and 1970s, and more than 95% before the 1980s. The information shows that over 95% of China's reservoir dams are earth and rock-fill dams, and their lifespans are usually only about 50 years. Therefore, most of the dams in China have exceeded or are approaching the end of their design life. According to the statistics of dams from 1954 to 2001, the annual rate of dam failures in China reached 0.088%, while the average annual rate of dam failures overseas since 1900, excluding those caused by war, is 0.02% in the United States, 0.004% in Japan, and 0.02% on average in the world. Therefore, the average annual rate of dam failures in China is more than four times the world average. In August 2013, flooding across six provinces in China resulted in many deaths and injuries due to dam collapses. In an article titled "China's Dangerous Dams: 179 Cities Facing Dam Collapse," the Chinese media outlet NetEase News said that more than 84,000 small and medium-sized reservoirs in China lack funds for management and maintenance, and that dams would collapse from time to time. As a result of reservoir and dam problems, 179 cities, a quarter of all cities in China, and 285 counties, a sixth of all counties, are facing serious risks. World's Deadliest Dam Failure In History | China's Banqiao Reservoir Disaster 1975 Everyone knows the story of the Titanic and how deeming the ship "unsinkable" practically assured that it would take a detour to the bottom of the North Atlantic. However, it wasn't the only project that received such an ironic title. China's Banqiao Dam was another that was thought to be fail-proof before it was proved otherwise. In casual conversation, the dam was referred to as the "iron dam" because much like the Titanic was believed to be unsinkable, the Banqiao Dam was thought to be unbreakable. It wasn't. The Banqiao Dam was supposed to be a masterpiece of human engineering. This earthen embankment dam straddled China's Ru River to irrigate agriculture in the Huai River Basin, home to 170 million people. Tons of packed, stacked clay—generally impermeable to water penetration—formed its core, while sand formed a thick shell around it. The eight-story dam was meant to stop the flow of 158 billion gallons of water, enough to fill 240,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, onto the towns and cities downstream. The dam took 15 months to build, and when it was finished in 1952, Banqiao was hailed as "the iron dam" by government authorities owing to its aptitude to endure 100-year floods and 1,000-year catastrophic floods. It was, in a sense, the Titanic of dams. Yet, after 23 years of building, the dam was in ruins, and 85,000 people had lost their lives in what Human Rights Watch, an organization that examines human-rights violations across the globe, eventually termed "the greatest known dam disaster in human history." How did a dam that was supposed to be unbreakable become a symbol of arrogance throughout history? And why have most people never heard of it? The state covered up the chain of mistakes that ultimately brought down the Banqiao Dam for a long time, but the lessons learned from that experience might help us repair our own failing dams. But there are several lesser known dams on the upper reaches of the Yangtze, on the more turbulent Jinsha River. Specifically, the lower Jinsha River boasts four colossal hydropower stations: the Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu, and Xiangjiaba. Together, these stations have a total storage capacity of 45.9 billion cubic meters and a flood control capacity of 15.5 billion cubic meters. The Xiangjiaba station, situated furthest downstream, is about 1,000 kilometers from the Three Gorges Dam and approximately 330 kilometers from the tail of the Three Gorges Reservoir. The Jinsha River, flowing through the steep and narrow gorges of the Hengduan Mountains, is characterized by its high, deep, narrow, curving, and steep terrain—a typical high mountain, deep valley river course.
