As many readers will point out, the NFL is a results league. At this point, the Cleveland Browns under GM Andrew Berry have made the playoffs once and missed it twice. During his time at the helm, the team made a controversial trade for QB Deshaun Watson and traded away fan favorite QB Baker Mayfield. That doesn't mean we can’t share information, whether good or bad, outside of just the team’s record and simple box scores. As we have shared from multiple sources, Berry’s offseason has been lauded for his ability to get good value, get players mostly on their upswing and fill important holes. After trading for WR Elijah Moore, Cleveland doesn’t have a first or second-round pick for the second year in a row. Last year, Berry traded down out of the second round, this year he switched picks with the New York Jets to acquire Moore. The NFL draft has been hit-and-miss for Berry. Donovan Peoples-Jones was a steal in the sixth round but Anthony Schwartz hasn’t lived up to his third-round spot. Greg Newsome II, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and Martin Emerson have been good to very good but Jedrick Wills hasn’t lived up to expectations of the 10th overall pick. Fans are hoping that some of the value he received in trades, like getting Emerson, Perrion Winfrey and Cade York in exchange for their second-round pick in 2021, will start to change results on the field. Given the limited roster space available, it is possible that Berry will have to start moving on from some of his draft selections like Schwartz, Jordan Elliott, Jacob Phillips and Harrison Bryant this year unless their performances see an uptick. Given that limited roster space, it would be shocking to see Berry wheel and deal during the upcoming NFL draft. Whether it is to trade up or trade out for draft picks next year, based on past performance we expect the Browns GM to get very good value in his deals. Even the Moore trade, which wouldn’t be included in the above data, is very good value for a former second-round pick that is still 22 years old. THE HERD | Colin "BREAKING" Jets trade WR Elijah Moore, 3rd-round pick to Browns from 2nd-rd pick
Cleveland Browns have added talent to their defensive end room but still have a need there as free agency pushes on. One NFL Dot Com writer believes that Cleveland and free agent Frank Clark would be a good fit. Clark was teammates with Juan Thornhill in Kansas City, where they both just won a Super Bowl. The Browns waved good-bye to Jadeveon Clowney before the 2023 league year even began, leaving a significant void opposite Myles Garrett. They've added a nice group of under-the-radar defenders up front, including Ogbo Okoronkwo, but it feels as if they can't be done signing additional contributors, especially considering how new coordinator Jim Schwartz likes to run his defense. A return home for Clark, a Cleveland kid who's looking to add another ring to his collection, feels beneficial for both parties and for Garrett. Clark was born in California but attended high school at Glenville in Cleveland. He went on to play at Michigan, where he was a second-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks in 2015. While with the Seahawks, Clark had 35 sacks over four seasons. His best season came in 2018 when he had 13 sacks. Clark has spent the last four years with the Chiefs; where the numbers have gone down but he's still been a good pass rusher. All three of his Pro Bowl nods have come with the Chiefs, the last in 2021. Clark had five sacks for the Chiefs in 2022. At this point in his career, Clark is on the back end of his career. He's still going to give a good pass-rushing threat, perhaps best in a depth role or late downs.Don't expect Clark to be costly, so the Browns could work it even with their recent acquisitions. Elijah Moore is now a Cleveland Brown! Deshaun Watson now has his fast, twitchy receiver to complement Amari Cooper, Donovan Peoples-Jones and the Cleveland Browns’ young wideouts. The Browns on Wednesday traded for Jets third-year receiver Elijah Moore, giving up their No. 42 overall pick in the second round and also getting the Jets’ No. 74 in the third round in return. It means the Browns now have no picks in the first or second round this year, but two in the third in 74 and 98. The Jets’ second-round pick in 2021 out of Ole Miss, Moore, who ran a 4.35 in the 40 coming out, became expendable one Wednesday when the Jets signed Chiefs speedy free agent receiver Mecole Hardman, further adding to their pile. Since last season, the Jets — poised to trade for Aaron Rodgers — have drafted former Ohio State receiver Garrett Wilson at No. 10 overall in the 2022 draft, and signed former Packers receiver Allen Lazard to a free agent contract last week. A source told cleveland.com that Deshaun Watson is very happy about the trade. The Browns are still deciding whether or not to sign another fast receiver in Marquise Goodwin, 32, who visited on Tuesday. With the Jets’ three additions, Elijah Moore (5-10, 178) kept falling to the back of the depth chart. As it is, Elijah Moore, who will turn 23 on March 27th, asked to be traded last year in the midst of a down season and after getting no targets in a victory over the Packers in Week 6. He engaged in an expletive-laden shouting match with then- offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur and was sent home. He asked to be traded and was inactive the following week against the Broncos in the wake of the outburst. They’ve had other receivers on their radar this cycle, including Broncos’ fourth-year pro Jerry Jeudy, but the Broncos’ are hoping for a first round pick for the former No. 15 overall selection in 2020 out of Alabama. The Browns talked trade with Denver, but likely would’ve had to surrender a good player to go along with No. 42. This way, they get an excellent young receiver and get to keep their core intact. They also get the No. 74, which should enable them to grab a starter or key contributor for 2022. They were not believed to be one of the teams trying to trade for DeAndre Hopkins. But one of the best things about Moore is his price tag. Heading into the third year of his rookie contract, his base salaries over the next two years are $1.472 million and $1.879 million. It’s a much better bargain for the Browns than to spend double-digit millions on an Odell Beckham Jr. or D.J. Chark. Beside, Moore will undoubtedly be hungry to prove he’s a much better receiver than what he’s been able to show so far, and if so, he’ll hit the jackpot before or after the 2024 season is up. As a rookie in 2021, Moore lived up to his draft status, catching 43 of 77 targets (55.8%) for 538 yards and 5 TDs, and seemed poised to make a leap in his second season. Isaac Okoro hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 0.7 seconds remaining and finished with 11 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers beat Brooklyn 116-114 Thursday night and closed in on their first playoff berth since 2018 with a two-game sweep of the Nets. “It was a lot of pressure put into the shot, of course,” Okoro said. “You always feel good with a game-winner. For me, it was my first one.” Donovan Mitchell scored 31 points, Evan Mobley had 26 points and 16 rebounds and Jarrett Allen finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds against his former team. Cleveland, which beat Brooklyn 115-109 on Tuesday, won for the eighth time in 10 games and reduced its magic number to clinch one of the Eastern Conference's top playoff spots to two. “It was ugly at times,” Mitchell said. “There’s just so much going on (in the playoff race), and at the end of the day all we can do is control what we can control and winning these games instead of praying that other teams lose or win, we just gotta go out there and do what we do, and it’s great to have a win like this tonight.” Mikal Bridges scored 32 points, Spencer Dinwiddie had 25 points and 12 assists and Joe Harris hit five 3-pointers and finished with 15 points as the Nets lost their fifth straight game. “It’s frustrating,” Bridges said. “Obviously, we’ve got to keep the energy and morale high, but it’s devastating losing like that.” Cleveland trailed 112-104 with 2:13 left before closing the game on a 12-2 run, with the help of three crucial Nets turnovers. Trailing by one, Mitchell missed a second free throw that would’ve tied the game, then he missed a put-back, and three different Nets had their hands on the ball for the potential rebound before it bounded to Cleveland guard Caris LeVert. “I thought we did a great job of getting some stops to put ourselves in that position,” Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “You miss the free throw, we had multiple opportunities at it, but guys didn’t quit on the play, and we talk about winning 50-50 balls and winning the scrap.” LeVert, who spent his first four seasons with Brooklyn, found Okoro in the corner, and he drained the 3-pointer to give Cleveland the lead. “The ball goes out to Caris, and I’m just running to the corner and going to my spot, and Caris trusted me,” Okoro said. “Once it left my hand, I knew it was going in.” Bickerstaff said Okoro had no fear of taking the big shot. “But I think what was most important is Caris saw that he was open and got him the ball, and that speaks to this team,” Bickerstaff said.
