It is the best of all actions.” Imam al-Ghazali This series of eight lessons covers the following topics: • Introduction to the Iḥyā’ and the Book on Knowledge • The Merit of Knowledge, Learning, and Teaching • ‘Ilm Ṭarīq al-Ākhira (The Science of the Way to the Hereafter) • The Restoration of Religious Terminology • Distinguishing Beneficial Knowledge from Blameworthy Knowledge • Etiquette of Debate and Its Pitfalls • Etiquette of Students of Knowledge • Signs of the Scholars of the Hereafter (‘Ulama’ al-Ākhira) In this first session, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus gives a brief biography of Iman al-Ghazali, known as the ‘Proof of Islam’ and the Mujaddid (Reviver) of the fifth century. He then analyzes Imam al-Ghazali’s powerful introduction in the Iḥyā’ and discusses key features of the Book of Knowledge, culminating with why the subject of Knowledge is the most important of all affairs. - Allah the Exalted says, "Allah bears witness that there is no god except Him—as do the angels and people of knowledge.” [Quran 3:18] Allah the Exalted also says, "Allah will elevate those of you who are faithful, and ˹raise˺ those gifted with knowledge in rank." [Quran 58:11] And the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever Allah wills good for, He grants him an understanding in religion.” [Bukhari & Muslim] Imam al-Ghazali states, “With respect to the human being, nothing is greater than attaining eternal felicity. And nothing is more virtuous than the means to it. Eternal felicity is only attained through knowledge and action. One can only truly act when he has the knowledge of how to perform the action. Therefore, the foundation of felicity in this world and the next is knowledge. The masterpiece of Imam al-Ghazali, unquestionably one of the greatest thinkers and theologians of Islam. It is divided into four parts each containing ten chapters. First part deals with knowledge and the requirements of faith—ritual purity, prayer, charity, fasting, pilgrimage, recitation of the Qur'an, etc.; Part two concentrates mostly on people and society—the manners relating to eating, marriage, earning a living, friendship, etc.; Parts three and four are dedicated to the inner life of the soul and discuss first the vices that people must overcome in themselves and then the virtues that they must strive to achieve. Volume 1 - Book of Worship, Volume 2 - Book of Worldly Usages, Volume 3 - Book of Destructive Evils, Volume 4 - Book of Constructive Virtues. As far as we know this is the only English Translation of the complete set of this well known Work of Imam Al-Ghazali (Although Parts of it may be Abridged translation) The Quality of the Print and the translation does not do justice to this Monumental Work, (For a better Quality Print and Level of translation see the translations of Individual Sections Some have criticised the book for quoting Weak Hadith and other traditions. This is true, however Imam Ghazali was well aware of the Rulings of the fuqaha (Jurists) of his time and he himself followed the Shaf'ee fiqh and he does not use these weak traditions as a basis for deriving Hukm (Rule) Shar'ee. Allah the Exalted says, "Truly, I am Allah! There is no god except Me. So worship Me ˹alone˺, and establish the Prayer for My remembrance." [Quran 20:14] Allah the Exalted also says, "Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish the Prayer. Indeed, the Prayer deters indecency and wickedness. The remembrance of Allah is even greater." [Quran 29:45] And the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “The likeness of the five Prayers is like a flowing sweet-water river at one’s doorstep that he dives into five times a day. Would you see any filth left on him? Truly, the five Prayers remove sins just as water removes filth.” [Muslim] In this session, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin introduces Book 4 of Imam al-Ghazali's Ihya 'Ulum al-Din. Imam Abu-Hamid al-Ghazzali is unquestionably the greatest theologian of Islam and one of its noblest and most original thinkers. He was born in 1058 A.D. at Tus, where he died in 1111. He reproduced in his religious experience all the spiritual phases developed by Islam. Starting his religious life as orthodox, Al-Ghazzali soon turned Sufi, and when still under twenty he had broken with all the past. In 1091 he was appointed lecturer at the Nizamiyah in Baghdad, where he became a skeptic. Four year later he returned to Sufism after a terrific spiritual struggle that left him a physical wreck. Intellectualism had failed him. As a dervish he roamed from place to place enjoying peace of soul and acquiescence of mind. After about twelve years of retirement in various places, including two years of retreat in Syria and a holy pilgrimage, he returned to Baghdad to preach and teach. There he composed his masterpiece lhya Ulum-id-Din (the revivification of the sciences of religion). The mysticism of this work vitalized the law its orthodoxy leavened the doctrine of Islam.
