On December 17th, 1903, the Wright Brothers flew for the first time in the KillDevil Hills in North Carolina. This event would spark a new era of travel, exploration and discovery and would change the world forever. I've always wanted to go back to where it all began. So that's exactly what I did. I met up with my friend Dave at Cape Fear Aviation Flight Training just south of Fayetteville. This is an awesome flight school with a great personal touch and huge success rates for students. Dave and I would spend a few days flying around North Carolina, with our biggest mission being going to First Flight Airport, KFFA. The Wright Brothers picked the KillDevil Hills on the outer banks for a reason. The winds were almost constantly blowing, more than anywhere else to their knowledge. They'd spend years preparing for the big day. They'd test and tweak, tinker and toil. Eventually they found a design and worked well. They flew for only 12 seconds and only went 120 feet. But subsequent flights would see them go further and further. This first powered flight would be the only to take off under its own power, remain airborne and land, all under control. While it was Wilbur Wright that made the first official flight, they were both partners in arms. On the way back from Atlanta (upcoming video) stopped in Kitty Hawk to see the Wright Brothers Monument and full scale reproduction of the famous picture. Flew into Manteo County for fuel and then straight over the water to KFFA. Very moving experience
If you are a pilot, I don’t have to tell you the historical significance of First Flight Airport (KFFA) where Wright Brother's Monument is located. Flying to the site where mankind's first power flight took place has been on my bucket list before I even became a pilot. I've always heard about this airport being challenging to get into due to the constant wind at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina and the power lines near the runway. So after some careful planning and preparation, I decided to take my family there in our Cirrus SR22 G6. From Republic Airport (KFRG), it's about a two hour flight to the First Flight Airport (KFFA) in a Cirrus SR22. Since there are many Restricted and MOA airspaces along the way and near KFFA, I filed for an IFR flight plan. In July 2020 - EAA AirVenture Oshkosh was cancelled. I made lemonade out of lemons and decided to fly all over the country for my very own 'ScottKosh'. I spent 19 days out on the lam. Today, I flew to the birthplace of aviation. Stopping at First Flight Airport has been on my bucket list for over a decade. I even got my logbook stamped with the KFFA stamp.
Here’s a trip I took last weekend down to First Flight KFFA in Kill Devil Hills North Carolina. First flight gets its name from the Wright Brothers and they’re historic “first flight” back in 1903. The park is loaded with historical information and has panoramic views of the surrounding area from on top of the hill. This was a planned meet up for the Smoke House Pilots Club and about 30 of its members from all over the East Coast. If you haven’t been to First Flight, I’d highly recommend adding this location to your future flight plans. Landing a Piper Saratoga (SP) at First Flight Airport
Flying over the Outer Banks and landing in Kitty Hawk, NC at First Flight ( KFFA ) on a windy Christmas Day 2018.
🤍 My first flight with Jenny Hawk and OBX Airplanes, out of Dare County Airport (MQI), North Carolina. We flew in Cessna 150 N704EV. After taking off from MQI, we flew South down the coast, over Waves NC (where I was staying), and back up towards Kitty Hawk First Flight Airport. My dad took videos of our takeoff and landing at First Flight. The First Flight Airport sits adjacent to where the Wright Brothers took their first flight in December of 1903.
