Then aged 40, he sat on one of Russia's biggest fortunes. He had acquired it through the privatisation of massive companies in the 1990s. He was hated by many as a get-rich-easy figure. Platon Lebedev, his right hand man, had been picked up a few months earlier. He headed the conglomerate Menatep, which included the oil group Yukos, and handled vast resources of state money. Khodorkovsky, with a degree in chemical engineering, had bought Yukos in 1995. It was President Boris Yeltsin's concession to him for having financed his election campaign. It was said that a dispute between Khodorkovsky and Yeltsin successor Vladimir Putin was behind the arrest. They were fierce rivals, one with the money - commanding the equivalent of 360 million euros to buy Yukos - the other with the political power. The oligarch worked tirelessly, applying western management methods as the sector boomed, swelling his fortune to some 15 billion dollars. He even saw a possible merger with the American ExxonMobil. The Kremlin glowered. Putin had vowed to cut Russia's oligarchs down to size. Khodorkovsky the industrialist was bad enough, but when he encroached further into politics he crossed a red line. He openly financed liberal party campaigning - political opposition to Putin. His Open Russia Foundation promoted democracy, civil liberties and judicial reform. His arrest came two months ahead of legislative elections. He was convicted and sentenced at first to eight years in prison, then also for petrol theft - 250 million tonnes - and money-laundering and sentenced for 14 years. He steadfastly mocked the legal process as deeply tainted. Find us on: Youtube 🤍 Facebook 🤍 Twitter 🤍

Putin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky: Putin realizes 'there can be no military solution' | DW Interview

Over a month after Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has come to understand that "there can be no military solution here," exiled Russian oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky told DW. Khodorkovsky, a prominent critic of the Russian leader, previously spent a decade in prison in Russia on charges widely regarded as revenge for challenging Putin's rule. Russian troops began their invasion of Ukraine on February 24. Putin announced that the operation aimed at "demilitarizing" and "de-nazifying" the former Soviet state and protecting Russian speakers in the country. But with Russia failing to quickly occupy the country due to strong Ukrainian resistance and its troops getting bogged down, Moscow recently announced a change in its war aims, saying that it will focus on the "liberation" of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. "Putin is stuck when it comes to the military operation," Khodorkovsky said, adding, "Putin has two options now: Either he escalates things, which could mean either introducing mobilization or using tactical nuclear weapons, or he can stabilize the situation and begin peace talks in earnest." In the interview with DW, Khodorkovsky also stressed the importance of a unified Western position. "The West's position needs to be clear, meaning comprehensive support for Ukraine if the war continues and in case Putin uses tactical nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction," he underlined. "That sort of clear position from the West will, let's say, help Putin make the right decision." 'No Doubt' Russia Will See Regime Change: Khodorkovsky

Former Yukos Oil CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky says Russia has moved from an authoritarian regime to a totalitarian one. Speaking to Bloomberg's Annmarie Hordern in an exclusive interview, the exiled Russian businessman also said the level of resistance in Ukraine is likely to have come as a total shock to President Vladimir Putin.

"I Paid With Ten Years of My Life", former Russian oligarch responds to question about his politics

Mikhail Khodorkovsky has experienced first hand the wrath of Vladimir Putin. Once an oil tycoon and the richest man in Russia, Khodorkovsky was arrested at gunpoint before parliamentary elections in 2003, stripped of his oil wealth and jailed on politically motivated charges of fraud and tax evasion after funding opposition parties. Khodorkovsky spent nearly ten years in prison. In order to secure his freedom and get permission to see his terminally ill mother he wrote Putin a handwritten letter, making three promises: he would leave Russia to spend time with his family; he would stay away from politics; and he would not attempt to win back his shares in Yukos – his dismantled oil company – or get involved in any court cases. But after the death of his mother in 2013 Khodorkovsky began to publicly criticise Putin once more and, while in exile, started calling for pro-democracy reforms in Russia. He is now one of Putin’s most influential critics. In September 2022 Khodorkovsky came to Intelligence Squared to share his unparalleled insight into the inner workings of Putin’s regime and how the Russian president wields power at home and abroad. Drawing from his new book The Russia Conundrum Khodorkovsky revealed previously unknown information about his own life to show how Russia really works and how the West can truly begin to blunt the Kremlin’s imperial ambitions.

Exiled Russian opposition activist on Gorbachev death

(31 Aug 2022) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS   London – 31 August 2022 1. Russian opposition figure, Mikhail Khodorkovsky taking seat 2. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Exiled Russian opposition activist: "For the West, (former Soviet President Mikhail) Gorbachev is undoubtedly a positive character. In Russia, things aren't so unambiguous. Nevertheless, Gorbachev gave freedom not only to Baltic and Eastern European states, he also gave freedom to the Russian nation. It's a different matter that we haven't quite managed to make use of that freedom. Unfortunately, what has happened now has shown that an overly centralised state inevitably means a lack of freedom, inevitably means war. It is necessary for us to finish what Gorbachev couldn't." 3. Wide of Khodorkovsky 4. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Exiled Russian opposition activist: "In Russia, Gorbachev will be remembered, on the one hand as the man who was able to give the country freedom; on the other hand, he will be remembered as the man who was not able to help Russia make use of this freedom." 5. Close of hands 6. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Exiled Russian opposition activist: "What is happening now, the war between Russia and Ukraine, is an extension of the process of imperial collapse, the Russian empire that was set up by the Bolsheviks in 1917." 7. Close of Khodorkovsky 8. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Exiled Russian opposition activist: "Gorbachev had the historic opportunity to bring that collapse to conclusion in the least harsh way possible. He partially made use of that opportunity, and we're all grateful to him for that. Partially, he was not able to do it, and it will be up to the Russians, who live today and who will live tomorrow to do it. Memories of empire, imperial nostalgia, is characteristic of many states, including Russia, but this nostalgia shouldn't lead to war. And for that to happen, we need to finish what Gorbachev didn't. Do away with the excessive centralisation of Russia, make Russia into a Russia of regions." 9. Close of eyes STORYLINE: A leading Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky said on Wednesday it is necessary for Russian people to finish what Mikhail Gorbachev couldn't, as the last Soviet leader died on Tuesday. Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union and for many the man who restored democracy to then-communist-ruled European nations, died at 91. Gorbachev was also reviled by many countrymen who blamed him for the 1991 implosion of the Soviet Union and its diminution as a superpower. The Russian nation that emerged from its Soviet past shrank in size as 15 new nations were created. The loss of pride and power also eventually led to the rise of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has tried for the past quarter-century to restore Russia to its former glory and beyond. Khodorkovsky, a Russian tycoon, who moved to London after spending a decade in prison in Russia on charges widely seen as political revenge for challenging Putin's rule, said he met "the most important person in my country" several times since 1989. "Gorbachev had the historic opportunity to bring that collapse to conclusion in the least harsh way possible. He partially made use of that opportunity, and we're all grateful to him for that," Khodorkovsky told The Associated Press. Khodorkovsky's human rights "violated" - ECHR

The European Court of Human Rights has backed claims by jailed oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky that his human rights were violated during his time on remand. The court had issues with the way Khodorkovsky was treated after his arrest in October 2003, describing the conditions as "inhuman and degrading." But no proof was found to back Khodorkovsky's assertion that the case against him was politically motivated. The hearing in Strasbourg ordered Moscow to pay Khodorkovsky - once Russia's richest man - just over 24,000 euros in compensation. ... 🤍

Oil Tycoon Khodorkovsky's Conviction Draws Global Rebuke for Russia

The latest conviction of imprisoned oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky this time on embezzling charges has garnered international attention and renewed concerns over political repression and the rule of law in Russia. Jeffrey Brown reports on the latest chapter in the legal saga for the wealthy Kremlin critic.

It was a totally political deal and Vladimir Putin has total political support." Moscow - date unknown 19. Wide shot barbed wire at Matrosskaya Tishina prison, where Khodorkovsky is currently being held 20. Truck delivers prisoners to prison STORYLINE: The two-year legal saga concerning one of the richest men in Russia is finally over. A Moscow court found oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky guilty of an array of charges Tuesday including fraud and tax evasion, and sentenced him to nine years in prison, minus time served. The announcements came on the 12th day of the laborious verdict-reading process in the most closely watched trial of post-Soviet Russia, and one which has been widely criticised as politically motivated. Khodorkovsky, the former head of the Yukos oil company and once estimated to be Russia's richest man, has already spent 583 days in jail, meaning he would serve about another seven-and-a-half years in prison. Khodorkovsky looked straight ahead as the sentence was pronounced. His co-defendant Platon Lebedev, found guilty of the same charges and given the same sentence, said, "There's not a sane person who can understand what you have said." Khodorkovsky's rise to wealth and power began during Boris Yeltsin's presidency in the early 1990's. Fearing that Communists would be elected, Yeltsin appealed for funds to Russia's richest businessmen. When the government couldn't pay back these loans, the businessmen were given control of Russia's natural resources for vastly-reduced prices - the era of the 'oligarchs' had begun. Khodorkovsky bought oil giant Yukos at a state auction in 1995 for a meagre 350 (m) million US dollars. Over the next five years he built the company into country's biggest oil company. Khodorkovsky's fortune was once estimated as high as 15 (b) billion US dollars. He was seen as the leading oligarch in the country. But Khodorkovsky fell foul of the Kremlin when he branched out into the political arena, giving donations to opposition parties and criticising President Vladimir Putin. Khodorkovsky gambled that the public outcry in the West and Russia made him untouchable.
