3D printed speakers can sound so good! Ad: Get an exclusive NordVPN deal here 🤍 it’s risk-free with Nord’s 30-day money-back guarantee! Want to build these speakers for your own gaming or TV setup? The 3D printable files are available for $29.99 - 🤍 Parts list: Disclosure: These are affiliate links. If you click them and make a purchase from the various merchants they link to, DIY Perks may earn a commission. Affiliate programs and affiliations include, but are not limited to the eBay Partner Network and Amazon Associates. It's approx $500 to build a pair (so $250 per speaker), which is good value when you think that a Sonos or Bose will set you back at least that much only instead of getting a single unit you get a stereo pair with better audio quality to boot! Subwoofer: Tang Band W3-1876S USA: 🤍 EU: 🤍 Midtone Driver: Tang Band W3-1364SA USA: 🤍 EU: 🤍 Alternative mid drivers (these performed similarly and fit the enclosure): 🤍 🤍 Digital Signal Processor : 🤍 Amplifier: 🤍 TWEETERS are optional, as the midtone driver + DSP sounds great on its own, but for the best quality a good budget tweeter is the SB Acoustics SB26STCN, which is my favourite overall due to its pricing, but a premium option is a Scanspeak D2608/913000 Tweeter. It has a bit more ‘sparkle’ and refinement, but this will ONLY be appreciated if the final speakers are given a signal from a high-quality output source like a dedicated DAC. If you want to print the baffles, the recommended magnet size is 10mm diameter round neodymium magnets, with 5mm depth maximum. Fixtures and fittings: 40pcs M3 threaded inserts (for the speaker drivers) 40pcs 3mm x 8mm countersunk m3 black screws (for the speaker drivers) 200pcs Self-tapping 2mm diameter screws, 10mm length max (build platform screws) 24pcs 3mm diameter self-tapping screws (amplifier screws, DSP chamber, midtone chamber base) 2x step-down voltage regulators, 5v output (for powering the DSP and fan) 2x 1000uf capacitor (add across the output of the regulator to reduce interference) 2x Power Adapters (100w ideally, each. A low cost option is old laptop power adapters) 1x roll of 16awg wire Recommended glue is CT1 - it sticks to PLA well enough and doesn't set too quickly allowing the whole speaker to be screwed together before it begins to dry. This allows any spill over to be wiped away (use an old brush to get inside the air guide etc). Sets with some amout of flexibility. Readily availabe in the UK but not sure about equivalents for other territories. Visit the Forum or Discord server to see what the community recommends for each region. SAFETY NOTES ON PLASTER OF PARIS: If you're stupid with it, it can be dangerous. NEVER put your hands/feet/whatever into plaster of paris EVER. It can suddenly set without warning, creating a lot of heat in the center, so you'll get burned or worse. Because of this never leave a batch of wet plaster of paris in reach of children or pets. Wearing a mask is recommended to not breathe in any dust, and goggles to stop it splashing into your eyes. Stay safe people!

Is a Deep Speaker Box Better? Tested with Surprising Results

The traditional wisdom says that if the driver is close to the back panel of the speaker box, you'll get very obvious reflections back through the cone that colour the sound. While this is now widely accepted as true, I thought it would be interesting to actually test it and see first-hand how much of an impact it has. The two boxes are nearly identical internal volume of 12 liters (the deep box is very slightly bigger). That volume works best for the driver I'm using for the test, a Seas coax H1144. The deep box is 8" from the back of the front baffle to the inside face of the back of the box, while the shallow box is 4" deep. I used the same driver (I only have one of these), crossover and test setup for each box. The shallow box is just deep enough for the driver to fit - the back is just 1/4" from the back panel. Measured first without stuffing, the tall shallow box shows a disturbance in the 300Hz range. This can be the "back through the driver" reflection mentioned above or it can be a standing wave. Adding stuffing (I used the same piece of rockwool in each box) shows no significant change for the deep box, but has smoothed out that 300Hz wiggle in the shallow box, proving that it is a standing wave problem. The standing wave happens up in the shallow box because it is taller and the distance from top to bottom is great enough to support a standing wave in that 300Hz region. The rockwool is damping material that absorbs sound energy, breaking up that standing wave. Tangentially, this also demonstrates that standing waves are only a problem when the box is big enough inside to support a standing wave in the lower midrange frequencies. Note that the deep box shows no improvement when stuffed, indicating that there are no standing waves of any significance to damp. So making a small speaker box with rounded or angled sides won't be effective for preventing standing waves, when they wouldn't be there to begin with. Finally a listening test using both boxes. The mic is set up around 20" from the speaker on tweeter axis for both boxes in my listening room. I deliberately withheld which box is which, leaving you to decide based on listening only. Give it a try and leave a comment, and I'll reveal the results in a future video. PLYWOOD vs MDF For Speaker Building - Tests Show Surprising Results

NOTE: This is to clear up some confusion over what I meant about bracing and damping: Speaker building was always bracing and damping. But at some point the idea started that bracing alone was better, just using a lot more of it. Guys were still doing the traditional bracing and damping (like me), but you also started seeing these bracing only builds happening. The idea was to drive up the panel resonance high enough so that it wouldn't be excited and therefore wouldn't be a problem I'm speaking 100% from a DIY standpoint, not from what the major manufacturers were doing. Will making the entire box from the same material make a difference? Possibly, but I did what I could to take the rest of the box out of the measurement. For example the box was clamped down to my very heavy and stable workbench to keep it as stationary as possible, and help restrict the measurement to the panel itself. Yes the other panels were still vibrating and in turn that can affect the panel being tested, but it's the same for each of the different panels. Each panel was exactly the same size - 8-1/2" x 12" with the screw holes in exactly the same places. Why 30Hz to 2000Hz? I did some "warmup" testing prior to the measurements I made to determine the best range that shows the most relevant data. 30Hz because the speaker I used doesn't have significant output below 30Hz. I used my ACH-01 accelerometer connected to REW to run the measurements. I made a special preamp for that accelerometer in this video: 🤍 My conclusions are that the material used is not a significant factor in how the speaker will sound. As long as what you are working with is of reasonable quality, you should not be able to hear the difference. You may be able to imagine you hear the difference, though, and the human psyche is a powerful thing to overcome. If you believe MDF sounds dull and sluggish, and Baltic birch plywood sounds lively and fast, then it'll be very difficult to get past that and you should use the one you think will sound best. As for bracing vs damping, I think both are valid. Use bracing to reduce panel size so that the damping will be more effective. The rationale of those that prefer bracing alone is that the damping "smears" the response. Much like above, it'll be hard to get past this idea if it's what you believe, so best to go with what you think is better way. Is Solid Wood Good for Speaker Building? Head to Head Testing - DIY vs Elac

My solid wood speaker build: 🤍 Upgrading the speaker: 🤍 The notable difference between these two speakers is that the Elac is vented and mine is sealed, and that has an effect on the amount of bass each can produce The measurement starts from 30Hz, so it's a factor but in my opinion a small one, since mine has a bigger woofer. I would guess that the Elac is braced, but the panels are probably 1/2" thick. The panels in mine (other than the back panel which is 1/2" Baltic birch) are 3/4" thick. There isn't any bracing in mine, but it is stuffed (not heavily) with fiberglass. Remember that what we are looking at in these measurement is how much the panels are vibrating. Don't confuse that with sound. The vibrating panel produces some sound, but it will be very low and almost impossible to measure since the speaker will swamp it out. The peaks in the measurements look big because the accelerometer is able to pick them out and plot them on the computer. Regarding stuffing: it is a damping material. It doesn't have the ability to chose whether it will damp the airspace only, or the panels only - it does both at the same time. The more you put in, the more it will damp both the airspace inside the box and the panels. My measurement setup in the last video shows how effective each one is at damping by weight, and this is not something you can do by measuring with a microphone. There might be an obvious difference, but you can't see which one performs the best. Stuffing can be used in vented boxes - the Elac featured in the video has stuffing inside. The key thing is to not block the vent with the stuffing. A vented box is just a Helmholtz resonator, where the volume of air in the box resonates and that sound exits the port. The tuning of that resonance is determined by the volume of the box (affected by the amount of stuffing) and the length and diameter of the port. There is no airflow involved. The air that pumps in and out of the port is the cone moving in and out, not the sound that the port produces to reinforce the bottom end of the bass range. People often confuse sound with airflow, when they are different things altogether. Building my new Speakers - Cutting out the Driver Holes and Recesses

With the baffles shaped and the notches cut out for the stands, I can layout the location for the drivers and get the holes and recesses cut. I'm flush mounting both drivers and using my trim router with a very simple circle guide. Here's a link to the video where I made that circle guide: 🤍 Included in this video is a pretty neat way to get the centre back after you've cut it out. I made the mistake of cutting the recess to small (the tweeter wouldn't fit) and I had to re-cut it after I cut the hole. I used dowels that are the same size as the router bit to put the plug back and it worked like a charm. This is part 4 in my series on designing making a pair of open baffle 2-way speakers to use as "surround" speakers in my listening room. 🤍tcrastrs.com End-to-end tutorial on how to build Troels Gavesen SBA941 speaker. In accelerating mode I have filmed key moments of the build and added comments pointing to important notes. The total length of the video is 30 minutes. Speaker box material 22mm Baltic birch plywood for the cabinet and 30mm for the front panel. Dowel joints are used for box reinforcement. Dowel joints are among the strongest joints in woodworking. Another benefit is that your cabinet will not contain metal parts. This was my subconscious wish. There is no logical explanation and answer for me why. In the project, I am using 8mm dowels. The key benefit is that your box components are true rectangular. You can order precise cuts in large plywood warehouses and cut them with an industrial saw. The allowed deviation of material cut should be within 1mm. When ordering parts you should give guidance on which dimensions should be set with one saw setting to achieve the necessary tolerance. Speakers used in the design are the following: Woofer SB Acoustics Satori WO24P-8, midrange SB Acoustics SB12MNRX25-4 4", Tweeter SB Acoustics SB29RDNC-C000-4. I reduced costs by replacing the original design “Satory” midrange with a more affordable unit and the same for the tweeter. For active speaker architecture, the performance difference is neglectable. 8Ohms woofer was chosen due to equalizing speaker sensitivities when setting ICEpower 125ASX2 in bridged mode (+6dB). 125ASX2 in bridged mode performance on 8 ohms is excellent still keeping about 250W. SB Acoustics Satori WO24P-8 is a fantastic quality speaker and I raised the crossover frequency to 550Hz to allow instruments and low human voice to play through this speaker. With active crossover you can play around this frequency to find the best performance point. Perfect bass, excellent clarity, and a deep rich human voice. It is also important for Jazz trios when a big violin (Contrabass or Chelo is playing). You can do a lot of modifications but do not go away from this speaker. Yes, it is twice expensive as other manufacturer products, but it is worth any penny. The first 1,000 people to use the link will get a 1 month free trial of Skillshare: 🤍 This 2-Way Stereo Floor Standing Speaker set was designed around a Mark Audio 4inch full range driver and a Tang Band 6.5inch subwoofer driver in a bass reflex enclosure. The goal was to have a speaker that will perform well above average when paired to good equipment with the advantages of a full range point source driver, supported by a subwoofer driver to give us that full sound we get from a speaker that can dig deep to 30Hz and extend all the way up to 20000Hz and beyond. We recommend that you use an amplifier that can handle a 4 Ohm load and is rated to produce at least 50 Watts per channel. When following this build plan, it can be built with everyday woodworking tools and by someone that has intermediate woodworking skills. The construction follows butt joints. How to make high end audio speakers for woodworkers. This project uses the Criton 2TD kit from CSS Audio and makes speaker building a breeze with their custom crossover boards. I knew nothing about speaker wiring and had very little experience with soldering before making these hifi speakers and it turns out it wasn't difficult at all. The crossover boards are designed to make wiring easy for someone like me who doesn't have the knowledge. The design and drivers used in this speaker build project is inspired by a few manufacturers that have used similar off-the-shelf drivers in their commercial designs. Some of these commercial speakers retail in the region of US$4000 for a pair. Considering that the total cost for the drivers I am using are less than US$200, I set out to design my own set of speakers using some of these drivers. I am super happy with the outcome. These speakers are now my favourite to listen to right now, and I think they will be for some time to come! #HomeTheater #HowTo #Klipsch I love Home Theater! And one name synonymous with Theater, is Klipsch. They have been making Movie Theater speakers for years. Heck they even designed a movie theater speaker for your own home. The Klipsch KL-650 THX Ultra II. These were the first real Theater speakers I could remember that you could get for your house. Today we'll be building a Bluetooth speaker! Visually it looks fantastic with a lovely wooden front and a concrete outer shell. This concrete not only looks great, but it helps audio quality too, as the sound produced by the speaker is very solid and confident due to the lack of resonance. Plenty of techniques will be used for this project, so sit back and enjoy! Parts links: Disclosure: These are affiliate links.
