The Volkswagen Golf R32 is available in three and five-door guises, with a choice of six-speed manual or DSG automatic transmission. Volkswagen's innovative DSG gearbox combines the convenience of an automatic with the efficiency and driving qualities of a manual. Unlike most automatics it can produce even better performance than a manual as can be seen from the acceleration figures: 6.2 seconds to 62 mph for the DSG against 6.5 seconds for the manual. With the UK firmly established as the world's leading market for the Golf GTI, it comes as little surprise that the R32 is highly sought-after. The UK's original allocation of 450 cars sold out shortly after the car went on sale; while continued heavy demand for the vehicle means residual values remain high.

Volkwagen's Golf received the R treatment for the first time with the Mk4, taking the GTI and adding in a VR6 engine to create the Volkswagen Golf R32. But, in its first era, not many people would get their hands on one. The unloved Mk4 Golf was replaced by the better looking and better loved Mk5 in 2003. The VR6 engine lived on, moving to fifth generation car and creating the second Golf R32, rivalling the four-wheel drive prowess of the likes of the Subaru Impreza WRX and Mitsubishi Evo. This car, which sold in much bigger numbers, would become the genesis of all R-badged Golfs to this very day although subsequent generations went down the four cylinder turbocharged route. Looking for a used Volkswagen Golf in South Africa? We have over 900 to choose from! 🤍 When the Volkswagen Golf Mk5 R32 debuted, the narrow-angle VR6 motor pretty much became an instant legend. With 182kW from the factory, in today's terms that's now GTI power, but back then it represented the most powerful Golf money could buy, and of course it was naturally aspirated, which naturally meant it was prime for some forced induction. Jacque De Beer who hails from Gauteng, South Africa, bought this car new and then immediately lost his first race in it. That was all the motivation he needed to build what must be the fastest Golf in the country. 8 clutches, 2 gearboxes and a lot of fuel later, his car now easily runs a 10.3 quarter mile, as if he's just popping down to the shops to get some milk.
