Is Russia playing the long game, by getting Western powers to deplete our materiel by feeding it into Ukraine to the point where we have nothing left to protect ourselves in the near future?

We should focus on marine and the air defence, not on an army to go fight other people's wars.
Because we are an island we should have forces that reflect that fact.

Cut the nukes and the aircraft carriers, put it into the army and the rest of the navy, RAF bombers and fighters.

How about staying out of American proxy wars while bringing actual real jobs back to the country- you know like manufacturing

I have mixed views about Dannet's comments. He is right about spending more and expanding the Army. He is wrong about the quality of the Russians. They are not ill equipped or ill trained. They are reservists called back to the colours. Remember, the Russians have been fighting for a year now. Their current performance is good. Dannat shares the blame for the state of the Army. He was Army Chief of Staff and Chief of Defence. He should have spoken up in a more forceful manner.

Dannatt and other senior army officers are correct that the army's too small o/a and has been cut irresponsibly to become a "2nd tier" force. THAT is what's unacceptable. HOWEVER, subject to those essential "1st tier" requirements, ALL our forces, army included, should always be configured specifically, first and foremost to do the jobs BRITAIN NEEDS AND WE WANT.

NOT what Dannatt and other senior army officers try invariably to peddle and have been peddling for three centuries. In other words, a big, continental style military with all the independent big-long-land-war-fighting capabilities that implies. Which as was wholly predictable, Dannat soon confirms to be his real meaning now.

The give away being that when confronted with cost restraints, he immediately trundles out the bog-standard army line that the RN and RAF will have to be cut instead. Ludicrously citing Putin's war on Ukraine in support.

Yet oddly enough, I was labouring under the impression that we're an island, so I'm still waiting to hear how Putin's hoards could just as easily sweep across the flat steppe and clean over our own extensive land borders.

YET OK, for now suffice it to say that some European powers do fear such an attack and with good reason. POLAND, for instance, which is prudently expanding its ARMY hugely to defend against it... AND IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH IMAGINATION TO GUESS WHAT POLISH GENERALS WOULD REPLY IF A NAVAL OFFICER OPINED THAT HE WANTED A NEW FRIGATE SO THE ARMY MUST TAKE LESS.

Bit of a slip of the tongue there, did he call Liz Truss Liz Trump or am I hearing things?

The US wants to break up the UK which would make us military weaker but are currently complaining that we should be investing in the British military more... They need to make their mind up!

Not so fast. EVERYTHING is lacking, our surface to surface capability in the navy is almost non existent. The RAF has zero heavy bomber capability. Long range air defence is awful.

The real issue is why would anyone want to fight for a country going through such cultural decay?
